PURPOSE
The purpose of this assignment is to become familiar with different cultural practices related to childbearing. This will be accomplished by identifying how health promotion and disease prevention strategies are supported by traditional practices throughout pregnancy, labor/delivery and postpartum/newborn care within the selected cultural group.
COURSE OUTCOMES

3. Individuals/group members will research the selected cultural/ethnic group to determine :
a. Beliefs/values regarding life, pregnancy, birth, health/illness, death, family, healthcare providers. b. Customs/traditions/rituals related to pregnancy, delivery, newborn care and feeding,
postpartum care. c. Dietary, environmental, and hygienic practices/restrictions during pregnancy, childbirth,
postpartum period. d. Use and interpretation of verbal and non-verbal methods of communication. e. Languages most common to the group if non-English speaking or English is a second language. f. Sources of emotional and physical support during pregnancy, childbirth, childrearing. g. Primary healthcare decision-maker.

4. The individual/group will synthesize the research information and develop a 1 – 2 page handout which should include: a. Outline of the above information for the selected cultural group. b. Recommendations regarding culturally competent care and communication with a
