NURSING MENTAL HEALTH ESSAYS

What is mental health?

Mental health is the state of complete psychological, emotional and social well-being and describes the absence of any mental disorder. Mental health also encompasses a range of experiences that a person can feel both mentally and physically. As stated by Barry M. Jenkins R. 2006, mental health is “a continuum from the most severe disorders to a variety and common mental health problems and mild symptoms of different intensity and duration.

The definition of mental health is personal based on one’s own life experiences and life context.    Mental health is also influenced by one’s gender, social class, family life experiences, and religious beliefs. Mental health has also been multifaceted with six dimensions; affective, behavioral, cognitive, spiritual, psychological, and socio-political.

Importance of mental health

Mental health is vital at every stage of an individual’s life, whether childhood, adult, or old age.  It decides how an individual will deal with the problems and stresses of life and how he/she will take part in relationships. Mental health also helps an individual make decisions in his life, recognize personal abilities, work productively and create a balance in all living activities.

How can we categorize mental disorders?

Various diseases can be considered mental health, also known as mental illness. These include common conditions like anxiety, anger, depression, drug dependence, panic disorders, alcoholism, insomnia, etc., or less common mental disorders like kleptomania, schizophrenia, delusional disorders, and   Tourette’s syndrome. For this reason, mental health patients are rapidly increasing in all regions of the world.

Causes of mental illnesses

Mental health diseases or disorders may be caused by various reasons such as genetic and developmental defects, injury during delivery or trauma during pregnancy, maternal psychological stress, etc.  In some cases, infections caused by parasites or viruses may lead to mental illness development, such as Schizophrenia-related to the contamination of a parasite Toxoplasma Gondi. Still, many cases suggest that mental illnesses can be closely related to negative experiences of an individual’s life, such as physical or sexual abuse, ill-treatment during childhood, etc.
