A Professional Nursing and Physician Culture is defined by “how we do things in our profession.” Professional culture involves beliefs, values, and assumptions that a professional nurse or physician perceives as important. For example, the nurse perceives values like respect, collaboration and open communication to be the norm of their professional culture, which play out through how they provide quality care to patients through good collaboration, open communication working together as a team with a respectful (or not) medical team, who all have input into the decision making process. However, the nurse soon realizes the influences of other cultures e.g. medical, hospital or agency culture and other professional cultures (e.g., physicians) as the nurse go about her daily activities.
