SIM421 Activity 2: Developing a Change Project Example Solution
A shortage of nurses is a critical issue affecting the quality of care provided in healthcare facilities, especially nursing homes. It is a global concern that has become more pressing in recent years, as the demand for healthcare services continues to increase while the supply of qualified nurses remains inadequate. This shortage can lead to burnout, higher turnover rates, and decreased patient satisfaction (Haddad et al., 2022). Effective leadership is essential to successfully address the issue of nurse shortage and ensure high-quality patient care.
An effective leader should aim to achieve the following SMART goals to address the shortage of nurses: Firstly, increasing the number of students enrolling in nursing programs by 25% in the next two years. This can be achieved by partnering with academic institutions to expand nursing programs, increasing the number of faculty and providing scholarships and grants to potential nursing students. Secondly, increase the retention rate of nurses within the healthcare facility by 10% in the next 12 months. This can be done by providing continuing education and professional development opportunities to help retain skilled nurses.
Thirdly, increase the use of technology to support nursing practice in all clinical areas within 18 months. This can be achieved by providing training and support to ensure that nurses are proficient in using electronic health records and that the systems are user-friendly and efficient (Huter et al., 2020). Fourthly, increase the diversity of the nursing workforce by 20% in the next three years through fair and inclusive recruitment. Finally, to improve the work environment for nurses, increasing nurse satisfaction rates by 15% in the next two years is necessary. This can be done by providing resources and support to manage workloads, achieve work-life balance, and encourage nurse-led initiatives within the healthcare facility.
Effective leadership is essential in addressing the shortage of nurses and achieving SMART goals like increasing the number of nursing students, improving retention rates, increasing the use of technology to support nursing practice, promoting diversity in the nursing workforce, and increasing nurse satisfaction rates. These goals can enable healthcare institutions like nursing homes to create a more sustainable nursing workforce.

SIM421 Activity 4: Communication Tool Example Solution
Effective communication is critical for ensuring all team members understand the project’s objectives, timelines, and deliverables. Clear and succinct communication can help avoid misunderstandings and ensure everyone works toward the same goals (Cranley et al., 2021). This paper will develop a communication tool explaining the project in-depth and addressing all change project participants.
The SBAR
SBAR is a communication tool comprising four components: Situation, Background, Assessment, and Recommendation. The SBAR is a useful tool for information and communication, either written or verbal, to convey important information easily, usually in critical situations (Coolen et al., 2020). The tool is highly applicable in discussing the change project on a nursing shortage with the relevant participants, stakeholders, or target population since it can highlight the severity of the issue and propose actionable solutions.
The Situation component of the SBAR tool identifies the problem, which is the nursing shortage in healthcare facilities, specifically in nursing homes. The Background component provides context and explains why the nursing shortage is a problem. The Assessment component evaluates the situation and identifies the stakeholders affected by the shortage, such as the director of nursing, nurses, unit managers, staffing coordinators, and caregivers (Shahid & Thomas, 2019). Finally, the Recommendation component proposes strategies that can be implemented to address the issue. The SBAR tool can help stakeholders collaborate and develop effective solutions to address the nursing shortage in healthcare facilities.
Addressing the nursing shortage requires collaboration between internal and external stakeholders. Strategies such as increasing wages, improving working conditions, and offering incentives can be implemented to retain nurses and caregivers. External stakeholders can also help by allocating budgets for staffing and providing resources to attract and retain qualified staff. Utilizing the SBAR tool to assess and address the nursing shortage can help healthcare facilities to improve the quality of care provided to residents and enhance their reputation in the community.

SIM421 Activity 6: Ethical Considerations Example Solution
Ethical considerations are crucial in implementing any change project, particularly in healthcare. Nurses shortage is a persistent challenge in the healthcare sector with significant implications on patient care and outcomes; therefore, implementing change projects to address this problem is vital. This should be done considering the ethical implications of such projects to ensure that they align with the values and principles of the nursing profession. This paper will identify three ethical considerations and discuss how they can impact the implementation of the change project on the nurses’ shortage.
The ethical principle of justice requires that resources, benefits, and burdens are distributed fairly and equitably. This principle requires that nurses are compensated fairly for their work and that their workload is reasonable (Varkey, 2021). The shortage of nurses and caregivers can result in a situation where the available staff is overworked and underpaid, violating the principle of justice.
Autonomy is the second ethical principle that impacts the implementation of the project. It requires that individuals have the right to make their own decisions and act on their values and beliefs. Autonomy requires that nurses be free to make decisions about their work and the care they provide to the residents (Oshodi et al., 2019). The staff shortage can limit their autonomy as they may need more time or resources to provide the quality of care they want. Therefore, any implemented changes should ensure that the staff has the autonomy to provide quality care to the residents.
The third ethical principle is beneficence, which requires that actions promote the well-being of individuals and society. This principle requires that the care provided to the residents is of high quality and promotes their well-being (Pandit, 2021). However, the shortage of nurses can result in a situation where the quality of care provided is compromised, which can violate the principle of beneficence. Addressing these ethical considerations in implementing this change project is important to ensure positive outcomes for all stakeholders involved.
